In this study Dr. Syed discusses the indications, mechanism of action, and side effects of the shingles vaccine Shingrix. There are two approved shingles vaccines, Zoostvax and Shingrix. However, Zoostvax has been discontinued since November 2020 in the USA. Shingrix is a sub-protein vaccine. It is made of glycoprotein E (gE) and an adjuvant AS01B. It trains the immune system to mount both the humoral and the cytotoxic responses. It is offered in 5 ml/dose for intramuscular administration, usually with a 2-6 months gap for the second dose. Let's review.

I'm 68 and just recovered from shingles. My doctor told me I should plan for the Shingrix shot in a year, and I asked why as having just recovered I thought I should now have some measure of natural immunity. He said natural immunity only lasts 1 year but the vaccine lasts for 10. How is that possible that any external derived immunity could last longer than natural immunity?

That's what's frustating. My PCP says yes, my oncologist no, so I've gone with my oncologists recommendation at this point. I am 72. Thank you for such a quick response.
