In this talk, we will discuss the mechanism of opioid-induced respiratory depression (OIRD). Opioids suppress the rhythm-generating neurons in the preBotzinger complex in the ventral respiratory group (VRG) in the medulla. Opioids also suppress the quiescence neurons in the preBotzinger complex that respond to external signals for respiratory modulation and drive. We will also discuss how opioids impact the central and peripheral chemoreceptors. Finally, we will discuss the chest wall rigidity and upper airway collapse by opioids.

Objectives:
Understanding the opioid-induced respiratory depression (OIRD).
We will discuss:
An overview of the respiratory center.
Understanding the respiratory rhythm generating neurons.
Effects of opioids on the respiratory center.
Effects of opioids on the central chemoreceptors.
Effects of opioids on the peripheral chemoreceptors.
Effects of opioids on the chest wall.
Effects of opioids on the airway patency.
