In this talk, we will discuss the mechanism of opioid-induced respiratory depression (OIRD). Opioids suppress the rhythm-generating neurons in the preBotzinger complex in the ventral respiratory group (VRG) in the medulla. Opioids also suppress the quiescence neurons in the preBotzinger complex that respond to external signals for respiratory modulation and drive. We will also discuss how opioids impact the central and peripheral chemoreceptors. Finally, we will discuss the chest wall rigidity and upper airway collapse by opioids.
