In this study, researchers demonstrate that Berberine reduces atherosclerotic plaque sizes, while the traditional intervention resulted in continuing small growth of the plaques. Researchers demonstrated that the mechanism of action of berberine is very similar to vitamin C, hence, they propose that Berberine works like a vitamin to modulate the gut microbiota's behavior, resulting in reduced production of atherogenic molecules.
