Donna's AANP Mnemonics for the NP Boards

1.To provide a learning aid to help NP students remember medical processed and the rationale behind them. 

  a. The NP student will use the mnemonic CAT to remember  what classes of medications can be given to African American patients or those who are not Caucasians. By reading the article cited the NP student will learn the rationale behind giving calcium channel blockers and thiazides to Non-Caucasian patients so side effects can be minimized in the hypertensive patients. 

 b. The NP student will use the mnemonic WITCHES to remember the medications that can be used in the elderly patient for isolated systolic hypertension and reading the article cited to understand the rationale behind the medications.

c. The NP student will use the mnemonics GRAM, VORS, and BNP to help remember what medications can be used and the organisms that third generation cephalosporins cover.

d.The NP student will use the mnemonic PASTURE to remember when glucocorticoids can be prescribed for certain medical conditions .

e. The nurse practitioner student will use the mnemonic HANG to remember to side effects of digoxin.

f. The nurse practitioner student will use the mnemonic USE to learn which organism are covered by using Nitrofurantoin.
